Angeline Cross is an HR Senior at Nissan's Sunderland Plant, responsible for pensions, payroll, the employee service centre, fleet services, and HR service delivery. Angeline is also deeply engaged in employee engagement activities, and feels that it was the introduction to executive coaching through Management Futures that marked a turning point in her professional development.
Because of the coaching course with Management Futures, Angeline was equipped to better understand effective coaching techniques, feedback mechanisms, and listening skills. As someone inclined towards a coaching style of leadership, she was already familiar with the concept. However, after a promotion to a more significant role this exploration of coaching from a new perspective was transformational.
We asked Angeline to reflect on her journey of coaching and the impact that it has had on how she works – here’s what she said:
The Coaching Experience: A Personal Reflection
“I was fortunate to be offered transition coaching sessions as part of my promotion. The flexibility to choose a coach from a selection of experienced professionals was invaluable. Initially, I was unsure of what to expect or gain from these sessions, given that my role was expanding in scope rather than changing in nature. However, this scepticism quickly dissipated as I engaged more deeply with the process.
“A particularly impactful session involved reflecting on my accomplishments and challenges over the past year. This exercise was not only a revelation of my achievements but also highlighted the substantial role coaching played in my transition. The sessions were tailored to my needs, with exercises spontaneously crafted in response to our discussions.
“The coaching journey struck a balance between being challenged and feeling comfortable. Often, it was the thoughtful silences that provoked deeper introspection. The safe space created by my coach allowed me to explore and share my thoughts freely, contributing significantly to my growth.
“As the scheduled sessions neared their end, I found myself reluctant to conclude this transformative experience. Recognising the value it added, I requested and was granted additional voluntary sessions. This decision underscores my commitment to continuous personal and professional development.”
Extending the Learning: Impact on My Team
“The benefits of coaching extended beyond personal growth. I incorporated some of the exercises, such as the 'Wheel of Life', into my team's development. These tools not only helped me understand my team better but also fostered stronger connections and a more cohesive working environment.
“One exercise that stood out was exploring my strengths and the value I bring to my team and the organisation. In the hustle of everyday work, we seldom pause to acknowledge our contributions positively. This aspect of coaching reinforced my self-worth and addressed the anxieties surrounding my new role."
Recommendations for Future Coachees
“For those considering coaching, I recommend a reflective approach before starting. Identifying areas of anxiety, challenges, and development goals can greatly enhance the effectiveness of the coaching experience. Entering the sessions with clarity and purpose sets the stage for a rewarding journey.
“The coaching journey has been an enlightening and transformative experience. It not only fostered my growth as a leader but also enhanced my team's dynamics. The balance of challenge and comfort, coupled with tailored exercises, made this journey uniquely impactful. I wholeheartedly recommend coaching to anyone seeking personal and professional development and look forward to continuing this path in the future."
